Facebook_grammar_tards

It’s easy to separate our online personas from who we are in real life but Facebook provides a means to bridge the gap between the two.  More often then not we’re left disappointed with the lackluster representations people put forward.  Most can understand abbreviation and other grammatical brevity in informal writing however when you’re a person in pursuit of a higher education, working professional, or just a normal person generally communicating to your friends, we have a level of expectation that your status updates don’t look like you up and decided to grind the keyboard on your crotch in a piss poor attempt to convey “What’s on your mind”.  Your terrible grammar makes you look stupid and the longer it takes us to decipher the gibberish you post the less I’m inclined to care.

Depending on how you use Facebook really weighs in to how you project yourself.  Personally I use it in a bit more of a professional capacity so drunk escapades and liberal use of cuss words are not in my repertoire of acceptable status updates.  Doesn’t mean I’m really all that judgmental in the people that choose to use it in that manner but I’m really hoping for some form of complete thought.  Something as short as a few sentences should be quickly understood without redundant read-through’s trying to figure out what, if anything, is being conveyed.

Funny Facebook Fails

This isn’t rocket science and I’m not expecting the pinnacle of grammatical perfection.  Punctuation is your ally in a world entirely based in the written word.  Even malformed sentences with the occasional spelling error are better then some of the crap I see.  Today I was reading and I noticed someone who, amongst no capitals, spelling errors, and liberal improper use of nearly every punctuation in the language, habitually did not use an apostrophe.  Anyone with rudimentary knowledge of a QWERTY keyboard is aware of the home keys and where your hands should sit.  Seeming that the worst offenders of this nature are often people under twenty one I expect a solid understanding of a keyboard and at least some official keyboarding training.

Placing you hands on the home keys, you’ll notice your right hand pinky finger resides a mere half inch from the apostrophe key.  You don’t even have to hit shift.  You would, in order to use the apostrophe, literally only need to move your pinky a half inch.  What kind of lazy sad sack piece of shit is so lazy as not to move their pinky a half inch to successfully come off 100 times smarter?  Yet I find these people unabated in chiming in on such weighty subjects as the recent health care reform bill.  I’ve met children who are still overcoming pants shitting accidents that have a higher mastery of the English language then some of these college attending “future leaders of America” or their respective nations.  I’d imagine this article would fly over the heads of any of the worst offenders to this but if any windowlicking Facebookers made it this far and still haven’t gleamed anything comprehensible this is for you: learn to talk more better with words cuz u sound fucktarded kthxbye.

Got your own Facebook pet peeves?

I can't say I fully agree with this article: it's perhaps a little too critical. For most, the internet is for aimless drifting, where people seek refuge from their dreary, monotonous lives. They don't care for spelling or for grammar, all they want is to murder time. Who cares if they degrade into a blissful stupor? Hammering out sentences is how they get their fix.

Anyway, who cares? There will always be happy misspellers and cynical grammar-nazis. I remain apathetic.

lol @ Free Grammar Checker Google ad below the article.

I don't Facebook at all, but the grammar standard you're discussing holds true in any facet of internet message boards.

pingping; there's a fine line between cynical grammar-nazi attitude and flat out retardation on the posters part.

There really isn't much hope in confronting someone who is putting zero effort into grammar or spelling -- or someone who is actually putting effort into NOT doing just that...

Dave this article and your comment saying this reading will "fly over the heads" of any offenders is a prime example of this truth.

I don't let it get to me really because it just shows one more retard I don't have to fight to get ahead of in life. They can remain blissfully un-aware of how most of society looks down upon them -- and I'll continue to look like a winner.

I'm sorry. But there simply is just no excuse for typing like a retard.

IM, maybe. Any kind of live chat where you're trying to convey something, errors are bound to occur.

But on Facebook or any message board, really?

It's not like you need to spend hours, but just take a few moments to look over what you've written, fix errors and hit submit.

When you deliberately feel the need to type like you're listening to Kei$ha while simultaneously jamming the flat end of a ping pong paddle up your ass do the world a favor.

Get up, move the chair away from your desk, walk back a solid 20-30 feet, then run towards the monitor with the purpose of putting your head through it.

Because the world doesn't need you anymore.

I'm a terrible grammar-nazi. To a high extent. Perhaps not -quite- as critical as Fndmntl, but close if nothing else. I need punctuations, correct capitalization, and periods, commas and question marks when necessary.

When I was looking into purchasing my home, I had a phenomenal Realtor who was finding me many a home I was very interested in. Due to my lack of time, I asked her to comprise a portfolio of all the homes relevant to what I was looking for. She took the time to do so, and gave it to me.

However, when I opened it up as I got home, the very first page had an error. I could not handle it. To this day I recall what it said...

"Nainoa-
Here's the list of homes in witch you asked me to populate for you..."

...

WITCH?!? WTF LADY?

Needless to say, I was really looking forward to going through this project she created all day, but upon reading that VERY FIRST LINE...

I never called her again.

Duce has the right idea. We're not expecting the next theological quip since Socrates to come streaming across our news feeds, just something that doesn't look like a third grader wrote. Typos, errors, minor grammatical hiccups, that's all well and good. Everyone makes those.

But I'm embarrassed for some people. Facebook and the internet in general can be a real place of inquisitive research or simple amusement and in EITHER case you should convey thoughts in a comprehensible manner.

Fixed. Remove the "and" -- or remove preceding comma.

Some fucking Nazi you are.

He's over-exaggerating his fervor. My point here, with this article and everything else, is that you need to be comprehensible. You're words shouldn't look like a big steaming pile.

Yes I am guilty of the overuse of the emoticon; :) ;) and twee abbreviations. I also overuse acronyms. LOL, Rofl, etc.

That being said, I also have a hard time taking anyone seriously who types like a 10 year old smoking a $20 rock.

actually, that's called a "serial comma"... it's not really right or wrong, but probably should have put a period after "period", but i'm not sure... either way it was a bit confusing the way he wrote it

lol @ dave saying "you're words" (no i'm not) in a grammar thread

anyways, i'm not as big a nazi as asshole duce is portraying, even though it is a pet peeve when people can't tell the difference between then/than, you're/your, they're/their/there... i'd rather that than what noodles used as an example above, saying "u" and "y" or no instead of know... like fuck people, it's two more letters, gimme a break you lazy piece of shit

but back to me being a grammar nazi, who am i to talk... i over/misuse ellipses, don't use capitalization, start sentences with conjunctions, didn't use a question mark when i clearly asked a question just now

Yep they consolized the crap out of the game. They butchered Dawn of War 2 as well, some people like that game, but to me the 1st is superior in everyway.
